ABOUT BC NOTARIES

Member
BC Notaries are a longstanding and trusted part of British Columbia’s community of legal professionals. After completing a comprehensive education pathway that includes a Master of Arts in Applied Legal Studies, candidates are enrolled by the Supreme Court of British Columbia and commissioned to serve the best interests of their clients by providing a range of regulated, non-contentious legal services.
Principal areas of practice include the preparation of personal planning documents such as wills, powers of attorney, and representation agreements, as well as conveyancing services for real estate transactions, and the authentication and notarization of documents.
Notaries are principally governed by B.C.’s Notaries Act, together with the rules, by-laws, and professional standards of the Society of Notaries Public of British Columbia.
More recently, the Province introduced the Legal Professions Act, which introduces a modern framework for regulating notaries, lawyers, and paralegals. Among the anticipated effects of the Act is improved public access to legal services through an expansion of the scope of practice for notaries.
